Udawalawa

Description
Tucked between the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces of Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park is a sanctuary where wild beauty and tranquility meet. Covering over 30,000 hectares, it was originally created to provide a safe habitat for animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir—but today, it stands as one of Sri Lanka’s top safari destinations.
Elephant Encounters
What sets Udawalawe apart is its remarkable population of Asian elephants. Visitors are almost guaranteed sightings of herds roaming freely, often including adorable baby elephants. Unlike other parks, the open terrain of Udawalawe makes animal sightings more frequent and visible.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise
The park is also a hotspot for birdwatching, with over 180 species recorded. From majestic eagles to vibrant bee-eaters and peacocks dancing in the wild, the park offers endless delights for nature photographers and bird lovers.
Diverse Wildlife
Beyond elephants, Udawalawe is home to water buffalo, spotted deer, jackals, mongoose, monitor lizards, and even the elusive leopard. The wetlands and reservoir attract a variety of aquatic birds and crocodiles basking along the banks.
Scenic Safari Experience
Jeep safaris through Udawalawe offer a unique blend of adventure and serenity. As you cruise through wide grasslands, forests, and waterways, you’re immersed in one of Sri Lanka’s most peaceful natural landscapes.
Whether it’s your first safari or you're returning to the wild, Udawalawe National Park promises an unforgettable encounter with Sri Lanka’s untamed side.
Tour Plan
Located in southern Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park is a haven for elephant lovers and nature seekers. Known for its large elephant population, the park offers one of the best safari experiences in the country. Open grasslands and dense scrub forests create the perfect backdrop for spotting not only herds of majestic elephants, but also buffalo, deer, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species.
Located near Udawalawe National Park, the Baby Elephant Milk Feeding Centre—officially known as the Elephant Transit Home (ETH)—offers a heartwarming and educational experience for visitors. This government-run facility provides care and rehabilitation for orphaned and injured baby elephants before releasing them back into the wild.
